Death Note's creators, Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, famously suggest that L is their favorite character in terms of both habit and design. L's design evokes a feeling of mystery so that the reader cannot determine his true thoughts, although the anime adaptation successfully considers his inner monologue. He remains a favorite character of mine as well.
